2012 Porsche 998 911 Specs Engine Rebates Top Speed Pricing and Review

Friday, March 18, 2011

porsche 998 911
The 911 is the most successful model in Porsche’s history. It started its long history back in 1963 and since then Porsche has offered five distinct generations: 911 classic, 964 Series, 993 Series, 996 Series, and 997 Series. Moreover, the sixth one is already under intense testings and will make its official debut in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
It may be a little unorthodox for Porsche to be bringing out a new generation 911 despite the fact they just revealed a facelift version, but the requests keep changing and Porsche must answer the call of duty. Their latest target is improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The sixth generation 911, or the 998, will be a completely new vehicle, even though everyone will recognize it as a 911 model. Shortly after the launch of the 998 911, Porsche will also be releasing the Turbo, GT2, and GT3 in 2012.
The new generation Porsche 911 has been caught testing by WorldCarFans months before its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Check out the video after the jump.

Exterior and Interior

Compared to the car it replaces, the next generation 911 will be about 56mm longer, leaving it with a grand total of 4.49 meters. The wheelbase will also grow about 10mm, but the car itself will be about 11 mm shorter.
Design elements will be taken from both the Panamera and the 918 Spyder concept. The exterior will be defined by larger front wing pontoons which house all-LED headlights, slightly deeper side sills, and door-mounted wing mirrors, and a more significantly sculpted rear end.
For the interior, expect more elements borrowed from the Panamera: top-spec Burmester stereos, improved sat-nav with better integration for mobile devices, and quality leather.

Engine and Performance

Under the hood Porsche will be downsizing the engine from the 3.6L flat-six to a 3.4L Boxer engine, according to German magazine, Autobild. The engine will focus on reducing fuel consumption (down 13% to 27.7 mpg) and CO2 emissions while delivering 345bhp. This will leave the new 911 with a 0-60mph sprint time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 180mph.
The Carrera S will also be getting a few changes made with a revised 3.8 liter engine working its way under the hood downgrading the old 415hp to 395hp. This leaves the Carrera S with a 4.5 seconds 0-60mph sprint time and a top speed of 188mph. Fuel economy is also down for this model with a 14 percent reduction to 25.8 mpg.
Porsche will also offer both brake regeneration and stop start systems that will help reduce fuel consumption by 12%. The new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox will also be offered. With no less than seven forward gears, the new gearbox combines the driving comfort of a converter automatic transmission with the dynamic gearshift of a sequential racing gearbox.
The sprint from 0 to 60 mph will be made in around 4.5 seconds, while top speed goes up to 185 mph.

The Competition

The next Porsche 911 will take on models like the Lotus Evora and Nissan GT-R. One reason for the next 911 to be happy is that one of its greatest competitors, the Dodge Viper, will go out of production, and until we have the chance to see a new one, the 911 will once again gain its supremacy.

When Can I Buy One?

The next generation Porsche 911 will make its world debut in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and sales will begin in 2012. We expect the prices to be almost the same, albeit with minor increases. However, for those wanting a more powerful version, we have some bad news; you’ll have to wait a few more months for that kind of power.
